| The Panels are the generic name I have given to my single-panel
comics. These are comics that I mostly have submitted to King Features, The New Breed, and didn't quite make the cut. I find that creating a single panel comic is much more difficult
than a comic strip, and my hat goes off to people who can consistently come up with a humorous gag day after day.
When I look at my own comics, it's hard even for me not to think they look like a Far Side rip off, but I think you can make that same statement for 90% of the single panel comics out there. This doesn't mean they aren't funny, and it's hard not to be influenced by someone as talented as Gary Larson. The othe thing I worry about is creating the same comic as someone else. There is no way to read all of the comics that are being created, and there are bound to be instances where two people will have the same thought. I've even seen variations of my own comics appear by nationally syndicated artists, comics that I have previously submitted that were rejected. I get a kick out of it when I see it, but I don't feel cheated. Hopefully, none of the comics that I will show will offend someone by looking like a rip-off of their own comic. Oh well, I guess it's bound to happen. As for the future of The Panels, I will only create new ones if I have a strong desire to do so. Currently, I have about 200-250 drawn that I will update on this site weekly. I have many more ideas jotted down, and if I ever get to the point of running low, maybe I'll make some more, but right now, I want to focus my time on Frankenstudent. 12/7/99 |
